Hello South Hill neighbors!
I am reaching out to you on behalf of the City of Bellingham to share an update on safety improvements along the 12th Street and Finnegan Way corridor. Starting the week of September 29, construction crews will begin installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of 12th Street, Mill Avenue, and Finnegan Way. Work is expected to continue through mid-October. The traffic signal will be linked with the existing signal at 12th Street and Harris Avenue for smoother traffic flow.
Why a new traffic signal?
This busy intersection sees more than 10,000 vehicles each day. With ongoing and future development in Fairhaven, traffic volumes and pedestrian activity are increasing, making a full traffic signal necessary to improve safety. The new signal will improve visibility for drivers, particularly for those traveling east from the steep slope of Mill Avenue where sightlines are currently limited. It will also enhance safety for pedestrians crossing at this high-traffic location.
Installing the signal is the final step of this transportation safety project, which also installed new flashing crosswalks, sidewalks, and on-street parallel parking in the spring. The project paused in June while waiting on delivery of the signal materials.
Construction impacts
During signal installation, traffic delays are expected so you may consider alternate routes. Please travel cautiously and follow flaggers and signs for your safety. Access to Fairhaven businesses will remain open throughout the project. Please also be aware that private development projects are happening nearby, including the Fairhaven Center Development Project, which may contribute to additional activity in the area.
